For shame! So the questions remains, why are women giving pilots permission to land? Sweet wheels, bro. But does it fly? Even the nicest car pales in comparison to a commercial airliner. Sure, there may be some phallic symbolism at play here. Obviously planes, if nothing else, resemble giant flying dicks. Women love uniforms: they’re like wrapping paper for people!

By the 23rd of December, orders had been prepared and issued to thirty year old submarine officer, Theodore Spuds Ellyson to report to the newly formed Curtiss Aviation School on North Island. Based on Ellyson’s monthly reports to the Navy, a decision was soon made that aviation could play a future role in America’s maritime services. While the Navy established some specialized test facilities in Norfolk and Anacostia, the development of Naval Aviation as a practical tool remained focused in San Diego. The fundamental changes in fleet structure from “Big Guns” to “Flat Tops”, the emergence of the aircraft carrier as the pre-imminent sea going weapon, happened mostly during the period between and in San Diego.

So dedicated was the North Island Naval Air Station to that development that at one time during the thirties every aircraft carrier in the US Navy was home-ported there. Naval aviation has come a long way from the A-1 Triad to the F Hornet and San Diego has been the scene for the entire journey. As such, San Diego is proud to be known as the birthplace of naval aviation.

Early Years Glenn Curtiss was the first to impact North Island during the early years of naval aviation. Curtiss had been conducting his aviation experiments and flight instruction at Hammondsport, New York, but the winters there made it impossible to fly year-round. Word of North Island’s ideal climate and isolated location thus attracted Curtiss.

Before my husband deployed to Iraq for the second time, he and I went through a particularly rough patch in our relationship, and found ourselves fighting, literally, all the time. We fought about stupid things, things that didn’t matter, but for some reason, neither of us were willing to let anything go. I remember mentioning this to another wife in passing, and how surprised I was that this build-up seemed harder than his first tour. I felt like I was at my wits end and worried about going into a deployment in this state.

She simply smiled and said, “Let me give you a piece of advice, honey.

At least, that’s what single sailors told Navy officials in a new survey on personal and professional choices released Wednesday. The survey did not delve into details about why sailors feel the Navy makes them less likely to wed, but the challenges of developing and sustaining relationships during lengthy deployments and over the course of frequent moves around the globe are well known.

The Navy is interested in these details and others about family life because it matters to sailors and the Navy wants to retain talented personnel. It also says these issues can impact readiness. The survey also showed that women in the Navy are less likely to be married than men, 56 percent compared with 77 percent, respectively. Of those relationships where both serve in the military, 56 percent of sailors said they’re satisfied with their ability to co-locate in the same region as their spouse, while 21 percent were dissatisfied, the Navy said. Meanwhile, 60 percent of married sailors said their Navy career has negatively impacted their spouses’ employment opportunities. Many states are working to ease licensing requirements for military spouses in professions like teaching so they can have an easier time finding work after being transferred.
